Teachable Moments

Photo by JD ~ Eternal Instants

The above is a photo of a letter my 6 year old daughter wrote to her ballet instructor.
We later added the words "...in class" to the end of the letter.

The week before, my daughter thought it would be cute
to talk, laugh and play during her regularly scheduled
ballet class on Wednesday afternoon.
Mrs. Merry, the very proper and well spoken, instructor came out of the class room
and made a "B" line straight for me.

I knew immediately that something was wrong.

She said to me...

"This is very unlike Hannah, but today she was rather disruptive.
Lying and rolling in the floor, talking and giggling with other children.
Did she have an unusual amount of chocolate just before class today?".

Well, I was pretty livid, because I expect grade A behavior at any and all public scenes.
(Also there was NO chocolate involved.)
This expectation stands no matter the situation
but most especially during a class in the area that she chose to study.

A class that we pay for on a yearly and monthly basis.

Oh no... this was unacceptable!

She was in some serious trouble and she knew it.

The following week, we discussed the issue and practiced
(keeping in mind the importance of eye contact during conversation)
her formal verbal apology to be given the following week.

We then talked about writing a letter
and what would be the appropriate way to write a letter of apology
(keeping in mind she is in grade K5).

I took advantage of the opportunity to teach proper behavior
and respectfulness to elders and educators
with a bonus opportunity to cover handwriting, a tidbit of grammar,
and vocabulary development (note: disruptive and sincerely were new words for her).

Needless to say, the following week she was the most well behaved child in the class.
And I hope she continues to be more focused and respectful in the future.

What is a teachable moment that stands out the most in your mind?
How did you deal with it and what method did you use to teach the lesson?

Love Learning

Photo taken by Eternal Instants.

To laugh often;
To win the respect of intelligent people
And the affection of children;
To earn the appreciation of honest critics
And to endure the betrayal of friends;
To appreciate beauty,
To find the best in others;
To leave the world a little bit better,
Whether by a healthy child,
A garden patch,
Or a redeemed social condition;
To know even one life has breathed easier
Because you lived.
This is to have succeeded.

"Because You Loved Me"

Did you recognize the title of this post?
Yeah, me neither!
I'm not a big fan of Celine Dion, No, I'm not even sure I've ever even heard this song.
But I love the title and so I have to start off by saying, Thanks Celine.

There is plenty I could say about Valentines Day.
I think it is an especially darling holiday.
"Speaking Of Love", I don't really believe in doing something
outrageous for Valentines day every year.
I am happy with some quality time away from the children spent only with my husband.
There doesn't have to be a really expensive date lined up for the evening.
There doesn't have to be a large amount of cash dropped on an expensive piece of jewelry
or even on anything at all.
I do love flowers though.
Roses will do just fine thank you very much!
But my favorite , most very favorite of all , are wild flowers.
Somewhat hard to find in the winter, but they are just lovely in every possible way.
Don't you think?
Also, I am an avid believer in Greeting Cards... I LOVE CARDS!
With all my "Heart And Soul" I can not stress this enough.
It doesn't matter if I get nothing else, a card says
"Hey I thought of you and specifically bought, or made this JUST for you!"...
And that is pretty darn special in my opinion.
Words can be delivered through a card that just bring the extra warmth that I crave
in knowing I am secure in the love of my mate forever and ever!
You know the old saying
"Sticks and Stones May Break My Bones But Words Can Never Hurt Me"...
Well, that isn't true in the least!
Words have more power than just about anything on earth!
The power of Life and Death are in the tongue.
Really???
Yup, Life and Death... that's what I believe.

"What About Love?"
Along the road in life, I have found that truly loving someone
means giving of yourself to another without expecting something in return.
No reservations. No expectations.
No underlying manipulative causes or reasons.
Just purely and genuinely giving of yourself fully and unequivocally.
It's called "Unconditional Love."
I have found that when I give myself away a little,
no matter in what manner, or to whom,
each time I do, it brings a bit of real happiness to my life.
Why do ya think that is?
I think it's what we are meant to do.
To give, to share, and to love one another.
It really is what we all want in the end, isn't it? To be loved.
To hear someone say, " You Light Up My Life", "You Belong To My Heart",
"Anything For You", "How Am I Suppose To Live Without You?".
These are the words we long to hear.

I am certain I have learned more about love than I humanly knew was even  possible to learn.
And I've a feeling there's a lot more to learn in store for me!
In this world of love and hate, give and take. There needs to be balance.
At some point, somethings "got to give" if there is no balance.

But in any case... Here is my heart.
Loving my husband, Mr' Takamine, more every day.
Sometimes I'm not even aware that my love for him is growing.
But days like today, Valentines Day,
remind me of how I love him more than I did 8 years ago when we first married.
My love for him is unconditional. We have balance.
He is certainly and without a doubt in love with me as well.
I don't just have his word, I have his heart. And he has mine.
Thanks for the card and flowers. I love them.
"Because I Love You" Mr. Takamine, and I always will.

I have highlighted in red all the names of different love songs here in this post.
Many of them were randomly picked.
And most certainly out of date... as is most everything in my life these days.
 Not excluding my cellphone.
But hey, if you haven't bought a new one in the last few weeks
yours is probably out of date too.
Jeez... Technology!!! But that's another subject entirely!

What is your favorite "Love Song" and who is the Artist?
Why do you love this song?

Science Center Awesomeness

On Saturday we spent some family time getting a little fun filled education at the local Science Center in our city, where there is a load of educational filled activities every second Saturday of every month of the year.

The previous night my oldest daughter and I went for the first time to the planetarium also located at the Science Center. Now that was awesome. The large theater dome showing of Astronaut was amazing and... pun intended, we had a BLAST!

I recently found that our local Science Center has a membership option for homeschooling families that had a really incredible value. Only $25.00 for our entire family of five. The membership includes an entire year of free visits to the Observatory and Planetarium showings, we have free admission to every second Saturday and plenty of other great discounts through the year... A GREAT value and a lifetime of priceless memories for just 25 bucks... That's pretty darn cool!!!

This was the one of the many snakes available for "cuddling"... NO thanks!!!
Not that I am a hater of all snakes, I know they serve a great purpose,
but I don't want to cuddle with them, I can and do appreciate them from a distance.

This was by far the coolest animal at the science center. A Bearded Dragon!
He was my favorite little critter there... except for the baby mice.

My youngest darling just adored these little critters!

This was yet another snake! A corn snake. I rather liked the color and pattern, beautiful!

Are they not adorable? I am afraid their fate may be somehow intertwined
with the previous snakes you saw above... some how very sad.  :-(

Crustacean creatures. Cool.

Sting Ray petting tank... That almost doesn't even sound right.

Acid or Base?... or Neutral?

The Periodic Table.

Learning about electricity and circuits.

I would love to download more photos, but these took FOREVER
to finish and it's now time to go make some dinner for my family!

Does your city offer any great educational fun for your family?
Museums, Zoos, and Libraries... We love them ALL!!!

"People come, people go – they’ll drift in and out of your life, almost like characters in a favorite book. When you finally close the cover, the characters have told their story and you start up again with another book, complete with new characters and adventures. Then you find yourself focusing on the new ones, not the ones from the past."
~Nicholas Sparks (The Rescue)
